Batch tracking software records each batch or lot of material and product as its own unit, with its quantity, location, dates and history. It links the batches you received to the batches you made from them and the customers who got them, so you can trace any batch back to its suppliers or forward to its customers. Most systems treat "batch" and "lot" as the same thing.
Most ERPs have a lot number field, and most plants have a spreadsheet next to it. The holes appear when the lot is recorded after the work instead of during it.
Each of these turns a trace into a search the day a customer or auditor asks for one.
Endpoint runs inside Sage and Acumatica, and Endpoint Cloud connects to NetSuite, QuickBooks Online and Sage 100. What each version does with batches differs, so each step below names the version.
Endpoint Cloud and Endpoint for Acumatica capture lot and serial numbers by scan at receipt and can print labels for incoming goods. Endpoint for Acumatica also supports GS1 and HIBC barcodes, which carry the lot and expiration date in the supplier's label. Our post on lot and serial tracking with GS1 barcodes explains how that works.
Each batch is tracked by bin, and license plates move a whole pallet with one scan. Endpoint Cloud manages expiration dates and enforces FIFO or FEFO (first expired, first out) rules. Endpoint for Acumatica enforces FIFO and FEFO in picking. For perishable goods, our food inventory post explains why FEFO and FIFO give different answers.
Endpoint Cloud Production records bill of materials consumption against work orders with lot traceability, so a finished batch carries the lots that went into it. It is sold with Storage and Perform. Endpoint for Acumatica's Production module posts material issue and labor to Acumatica production orders and needs Acumatica Manufacturing Edition.
Endpoint Cloud validates each shipment and checks every item by scan at the pack station. Endpoint for Acumatica runs quality checks at pick and pack before an order leaves the dock. Endpoint Cloud traces a batch forward to the customers who received it and backward to the receipts it came from. Endpoint for Acumatica keeps a full audit trail of each scan inside Acumatica.
Endpoint works alongside the ERP you already run instead of replacing it, and the table shows what batch tracking covers on each. For how the two systems split the work, see warehouse software that works with your ERP.
Endpoint Cloud also connects to Sage 100. On that connection it syncs on a schedule, as often as once a minute, and does not sync bills of materials or work orders.
Food and beverage manufacturers use it for lot-level recalls, expiration control and FSMA 204 records. Makers of packaged formulated products, such as cosmetics and specialty chemicals, use it to tie each finished batch to the raw material lots in it.
Endpoint tracks the physical batch on the floor. Formulas and safety data sheets stay in your ERP or your compliance system.

In most systems there is none. Both identify a quantity of material or product made or received together and managed as one unit, usually with the same production or expiration date. Some plants say "batch" for what they make and "lot" for what they buy, but the software treats them the same way.
Assign it when material comes under your control. For raw materials and bought-in goods, that is receiving, and you should keep the supplier's lot code next to your own. For finished goods, it is production. A batch number added at shipping has no history before that point.
It should, and you should ask how. With Endpoint for Acumatica the lot data lives inside Acumatica. With Endpoint Cloud, lots are captured on the floor and transactions sync with NetSuite, QuickBooks Online or Sage 100. On Sage 100 itself, lot and serial control is set on each item, and Endpoint requires the lot or serial on every scan of a controlled item.
Endpoint Cloud manages expiration dates and enforces FIFO or FEFO rotation at the pick. Endpoint for Acumatica enforces FIFO and FEFO in picking.
