Trusted by 40,000+ operators since 1989.
It records which lot of each ingredient and finished product you received, where it is stored, what it went into and which customers it shipped to. With those links recorded at each step, you can trace one lot forward to customers or back to suppliers without rebuilding its history from paperwork.
For a manufacturer that packs finished goods in cases and on pallets, most of that record is created or lost in the warehouse and on the line. That is the part Endpoint covers.
Most food manufacturers already have lot numbers in the ERP. The gaps are in how lot data gets into it.
When a customer, an auditor or the FDA asks where a lot went, each of these gaps turns into a search through paper.
Each lot is scanned at every step, so its history builds while the work happens. What each step covers depends on your ERP; the table below has the detail.
Lot and serial numbers are scanned as goods arrive, so nothing waits to be keyed in from paperwork. Endpoint Cloud and Endpoint for Acumatica also read GS1 case labels, which carry the lot and expiration date in one scan.
Bins and license plates track each pallet by location, so a lot can be found and put on hold where it sits. FIFO or FEFO (first expired, first out) rules at the pick send the right lot out. Read why FEFO beats FIFO for food stock.
Ingredients are issued to the work order by scan, so the batch record shows which lots were used, not just what the recipe called for.
Endpoint Cloud traces a lot forward to the customers who received it and back to the receipt it came from. Endpoint for Acumatica keeps a full audit trail of each scan inside Acumatica.
Plenty of manufacturers search for a food ERP, assuming lot traceability means replacing the ERP. If yours already runs finance well, the fix is how lot data gets into it, and that is the job Endpoint does. See what warehouse software adds to your ERP.
Endpoint Cloud can also connect to Sage 100. It syncs on a schedule, as often as once a minute, and does not sync bills of materials or work orders.
If you sell by the pound and ship by the case, Endpoint for Sage 100 handles catch weight in the Warehouse Professional Package, so each case is shipped and invoiced at its actual weight.
For foods on the FDA's Food Traceability List, the Food Traceability Rule requires an electronic sortable spreadsheet of traceability records within 24 hours of a request during an outbreak or recall. Our FSMA 204 compliance guide covers who is covered and which records to keep.
FDA publishes the Food Traceability Rule.
The original compliance date, since pushed back.
Earliest FDA enforcement. Congress barred enforcement before this date in November 2025.
A customer audit or a mock recall can ask the same question at any time. If your suppliers label cases with GS1-128 barcodes, read how lot and serial tracking with GS1 barcodes works at receiving. In a cooler or freezer, linking the temperature log to the pallets in that zone is a scanning job too, covered in our post on running a cold storage warehouse.

Under FSMA 204, firms that manufacture, process, pack or hold foods on the Food Traceability List must keep Key Data Elements for each Critical Tracking Event, such as receiving, shipping and transformation, and give records to the FDA within 24 hours of a request. FDA will not enforce it before July 20, 2028. Separately, a facility making food with a hazard that requires a preventive control must have a written recall plan under 21 CFR 117.139.
Forward traceability follows a lot from your plant to the customers who received it. Backward traceability follows it back to the ingredient lots and suppliers it came from. A recall needs both: backward to find the cause and forward to find the product.
Most food manufacturers run an ERP or accounting system for orders, costs and inventory value, and many add food safety or quality software for audits and documents. Warehouse and traceability software sits between the plant and the ERP and records each lot as it moves.
Not necessarily. Lot records can stay in the ERP you run today, as long as each lot is captured by scan while the work happens. Endpoint does that alongside Sage, Acumatica, NetSuite and QuickBooks Online.
